This artwork displays the compositional and and emotional aims of Neo - Classical and Romantic artists. These artists wanted often showed a chaotic or emotional scene in a calm and stable composition, such as in the shape of a triangle. Neo - Classical and Romantic artists also created a fake pathos. Even though it is an emotional scene, the subjects do not display true emotions. The depiction of such a heroic act was so the patron, Watson, could show his courage.
![]() 1. How is Durer responding to the art being made in Italy during the Renaissance? Durer chooses to go away from naturalism in order to show his mastery of Vitruvian ideals. He takes from Italian and classical tradition when making his art. He mirrors classical proportions in his work. Durer reflects the Renaissance, though, by making the physical proportions of the body correlate with the interior harmony of the humors. Theories of idealized proportion. Adam and Eve stand like classical sculptures with perfect proportions. 2. What are some Medieval aspects of Durer's print? The four animals found in the print represent the medieval idea of the four temperaments. The cat represents choleric, the rabbit sanguine, the ox phlegmatic, and the elk melancholic. These humors are included to show the harmony of when Adam and Eve were at peace but the unbalance that resulted from them being expelled. The serpent and forbidden fruit symbolize evil and temptation. 3. Durer is often called one of the greatest printmaker of all time. Why do you think he perfected this particular skill? What makes him one of the best? I think Durer preferred this skill because, like Leonardo da Vinci, Durer had a scientific mind and a curious intellect. He relied on his prints for profit and recognition because making multiples of a work of art allowed the images to be seen by a variety of unknown viewers under a variety of circumstances. I think that Durer is known as one of the best because he took classical and well known ideas but turned them into something new and refreshing. Like the Adam and Eve print, Durer used a known story but presented in a new light as he imagined it. Durer was also able to blend classical practices with his own artistic innovation and modern ideas. I believe that, as an artist, Leonardo da Vinci cared about the innovative aspect of art. Leonardo da Vinci was also a scientist. This means that he was interested in discovery and new ideas. His innovative side can be seen in his paintings such as The Virgin of the Rocks and the Mona Lisa. In these drawings his invention, sfumato, can be seen. His lightning techniques were not the only way in which he associated himself with a more scientific or inventive approach to art. In Two Drawings da Vinci shows his scientific side once more by creating figures and the human body as exact and evenly proportional as possible.
I did not know of all the symbolism that was a part of Hinduism: color, objects that are held by the gods in artwork, nature, etc. The concept that there are no unifying beliefs in the religion was also new to me. Something I didn't know about Buddhism before was that people of this religion practiced the "middle way" and rejected extremes. I also did not know about the way Buddhists believe the universe is structured. I like that Hinduism is about the connection between living things while also emphasizing on individual holiness. I believe that it is important to acknowledge one's effect on others and think about how to benefit and love others while also focusing on oneself. If I were Buddhist, my life would probably not be as hectic and anxiety filled. My schedule would evolve around doing good in the world and bettering myself. I would take more time out of my day for prayer and meditation, which would probably improve my mood and anxiety. My life would be calmer and I would examine and really care about the consequences of my actions.
These cliff dwellings were used as homes. Walls were plastered with murals which displayed geometric designs, plants, and animals. These were probably important because of the agricultural importance to the Puebloans. Some of the geometric designs are thought to represent nature as well, such as the clouds, rain, sun, moon, or mountains. This shows the importance of nature to the Ancestral Puebloan people. The Ancestral Puebloans greatly benefited from the environment. Using the side of a cliff for their structure, they were safe from damaging weather and people. Like the Longmen caves in china, the Mesa Verde Cliff Dwellings are full of art and other objects that show the importance of that particular culture's religious beliefs.
The art during this period will probably depict religious figures and be used for worship, especially the architecture. Some places will study theology, music, literacy, and poetic invention, while the Islamic world will study scientific and mathematical theory. Due to the influence of other cultures, Medieval art will vary in style, have a primarily religious or courtly subject matter, and incorporation of text. Calligraphy and the importance of script will also make an appearance during this unit. **Mrs. Field, I did this assignment on time, but was not aware that this had to be published on the blog and did it on paper. Will I get points off for publishing it late? The Buddha sculptures in the Bamiyan Valley of Central Afghanistan were created in the 6th-7th century and were rock – cut. The sculptures were considered the largest in the world and their existence conveys the importance of the Buddhist faith and the valley during this period. Bamiyan is a green valley bounded by cliffs. To the north and south stand tall, snow covered mountains with flat cultivated bottomlands which is divided by a river. Buddhist monks were drawn to this spot, possibly due to its sense of apartness, to build a large center which is supervised by large statues of the Buddha staring out from the cliffs. Besides the monastic center, a major trade route also passed through Bamiyan which linked India and Central Asia bringing wealth and turmoil to both. The Buddha statues, though, were eventually destroyed by Aurangzeb’s soldiers in the 18th century and were blown up by the Taliban zealots in 2001.
Buddhism was important to the rise of Bamiyan due to its religious practices that spoke to large amounts of people and appealed to a style of illustrative art. The deified Buddha sculptures was then created by the sculptors of Gandhara who had found ways to give a physical form to the Buddha. Every museum of Asian art displays examples of Ganhara sculpture. The valley of Bamiyan made a natural route for migration and trade. Many monks settled in this area where they created their center and Buddha statues. But in 1221 CE Ghengis Khan sent a small army and his favorite grandson to seize the valley. When his grandson was killed, Khan wanted revenge. Not even the watchtowers and massive fortresses of Bamiyan were able to survive the attacks. But the Buddhas, which stood over 100 feet tall and were brightly painted, are still stood many years later. The two monumental Buddha sculptures were carved into a cliff facing the Bamiyan Valley using high relief. The feet were carved in round, allowing people to worship by circumambulation, the act of walking around an object. The Buddha images show that the people of the Bamiyan Valley were influenced by the art and cultures of India. The Buddhas were covered in pigments so that they would appear to be made of metal and other materials. Some scholars believe that the facers were constructed of masks made of wood and brass, though no other features were made of copper or other materials. It is such a shame for something so grand and spectacular to be destroyed and involved in such a brutal history. The Buddha statues not only show the value of Buddhism during that period, but also the strength and prosperity of the Bamiyan Valley. Just like the destruction of artifacts in the Mosul museum by ISIS soldiers, the loss of the Buddha statues damages the historical aspects of the works.Though reconstruction is not always a possibility, archaeological research has brought about new tools in attempts to preserve the past. Technology can now project 3D images onto an empty cliff to show where the Buddha statues once were. Sadly, I do not think there is much that can be done to protect historic sites in the midst of war, I do believe that there should be more of a military presence to provide protection as well as stricter punishments enforced for those who tamper with these sites. Local service organizations could also create groups that work to help fund the preservation of such sites. The Terracotta Warriors were a part of the Qin Dynasty's First Emperor, Qin Shihuang's, tomb in China. The First Emperor had an obsession with the afterlife and immortality. This is seen throughout his burial complex, which was an underground city guarded by a life - size terracotta army. Accompanying this army were warriors, infantrymen, horses, chariots, and weaponry. This underground army is considered one of the most remarkable and mysterious discoveries from the ancient world.
The burial complex did not only contain aspects of war. It was also complete with gardens, stables, bronze ritual vessels, jade jewelry, and a wealth of gold and silver ornaments. The First Emperor believed this subterranean domain would parallel his worldly existence after death. The terracotta army was meant to protect him in the afterlife and a treasury of riches to represent stars were to act as a guide for crossing over to an immortal existence, as Qin Shihuang believed the cosmos would do this. The Terracotta Warriors revealed much about the Qin Dynasty when found in 1974. Each warrior had a unique face and clothing. Studies of the warriors' proportions reveal that they were even created using an assembly - line. |
