Travelers by Mountains and Streams was painted by Fan Kuan. This work of art reflects Kuan's worldview. The landscape played a major role in the shaping of the Chinese mind and character. The Chinese viewed the mountains as sacred. Neo - Confucianism is a reinterpretation of Chinese moral philosophy. Buddhism first introduced a system of metaphysics and a coherent worldview more advanced that anything previously known in China. Scholars were then able to engage in philosophical discussions. The Neo - Confucian theory of observation in the light of an object's own principles is reflected in Fan Kuan's artwork. Being able to present different aspects of a landscape within a single composition by shifting viewpoint created an image of a moral and orderly universe. Travelers by Mountains and Streams reflects the image of a harmonious existence between man and nature.
