#90: Master of Calamarca, Angel with Arquebus
1. Guns, angels, and fashion are all depicted in the artwork. This is to represent celestial, aristocratic, and military beings all at once.
2.The angelic depictions in the artwork were banned during the Catholic Counter Reformation, but remained in Peru and Baroque Spain. Prints of this painting were widespread in the Americas and influenced angelology discourse in the Americas.
3. It is interesting that such contrasting subject matters can come together to represent one overall picture. It is often thought that a nation's military, religious beliefs, belong in separate spheres. This work of art proves that they can be blended together to fully display the nation as a whole, along with everything for which it stands.
#94: Screen with the Siege of Belgrade and Hunting Scene
1. The screen depicts a chaotic battle scene between members of the Hapsburg Empire and the Turks. The other side of the screen depicts a hunting scene.
2. The screen was influenced by Japanese art due to the influx of Japanese items into Mexico during that time. It also mirrors Japanese artwork in the landscape and floral patterns. The hunting scene was inspired by Medici art. This side also displays a landscape painting with classical elements.
3. It is interesting to see a Japanese influenced work of art which depicts an, at the time contemporary, Mexican subject matter. It is also interesting that each panel of the screen was intended for a different audience. This showed the work's political importance. The other side of the screen was aimed more towards women. This is important to show the wide range of people who were intended to view the art. The variety of influence: classical Rome, the Renaissance, and Japan, demonstrated the importance of trade.
#95: Virgin of Guadalupe
1. The artwork depicts the Virgin Mary which relates to Immaculate Conception imagery.
2. The image of the Virgin of Guadalupe can be found everywhere in Mexico today: churches, chapels, homes, restaurants, and vehicles. Some believe that her ashen skin represents the indigenous Madonna. Her many different stories led many to worship and accept this figure.
3. It is interesting that one image can relate to so many different ethic groups. Just the depiction of the Virgin of Guadalupe creates a different feeling in each viewer. This image also proves that New Spain was equal to Europe in the sense that such great artists created such powerful images which evoked emotion in every viewer.
#97: Spaniard and Indian Produce a Mestizo, attributed to Juan Rodriguez
1. The artwork depicts a Spanish father and Indigenous mother with their son.
2. This painting is a part of a series of works that seek to document the inter - ethnic mixing occurring in New Spain among indigenous peoples, Africans, Europeans, and the mixed - race population. This series convey the idea that the more European a person is, the closer he is to the top of the social and racial hierarchy. Pure Spaniards were always the most prominent in these paintings.
3. It is interesting that this type of painting mirrored Enlightenment concerns, such as the idea that people can be rationally categorized based on their ethnic makeup and appearance. It is a shame that after the Renaissance when people began to shape their own destinies and ideas a series of work regressed to a more scholastic ideal which says people cannot control their lives.
